The public transportation in Elba can be disappointing. Low season means a scarcity of buses. The high season comes with large crowds. Using the train is limiting, which leaves us with the option of renting a car. Other than helping you save some money, having a car of your own can help you explore the island freely, in addition to keeping your belongings safe while accessing destinations off the beaten path.
Drivers in all of Italy are fairly aggressive. Instead of trying to keep up with them, let them pass. The speed limits enforced in the area are strict and often lead to heavy fines once broken. There is proper signage on the roads, so always keep a lookout for them. You're also required to have a reflective safety vest in the car. If your car breaks down, put it on before getting out of the vehicle.
To rent a car in Elba, you must be twenty five years old. Those younger than twenty five may be permitted to rent a car, but for an additional fee. You'll also need to get an International Driver’s License to help non-English speakers know that you are licensed to drive. Additionally, you’ll need a valid driver's license that’s been in use for two years, an original ID or passport, personal credit card, and a prepaid booking voucher, in case you booked in advance.
