Kefalonia is well covered by the local KTEL bus network, but because these run predominantly between the main towns, if you want to explore off-grid your best option is to hire a car. This is a more cost-effective option than catching taxis around the island to go where the buses don’t. You can drive to the Assos Peninsula and visit Assos village with its 16th-century Venetian castle, fishing boats and tavernas. Myrtos Beach is one of the most famous in the Greek islands, or head for the quieter Antisamos Beach. Then take a drive to Melissani Cave, an underground lake known as the Cave of the Nymphs in Greek mythology.
Driving in Kefalonia is generally relaxed as it’s not a congested tourist island, except during the Greek holiday season from around the middle of July till the end of August. In fact most of the other traffic you’ll encounter will be fellow tourists making their way leisurely between the island’s tourist attractions. Speed limits vary are 30mph in the villages, and can vary between 55mph and almost 70mph depending on the surrounding area, so make sure to keep an eye out for the speed limit signs. You should always drive defensively on the rural roads and expect the unexpected, like cars slowly turning onto the road around blind corners on some of the really twisty roads.
To hire a car in Kefalonia you’ll need to be at least 18 years old. However, you can only hire smaller, lower power models at that age from KAYAK. To hire more powerful vehicles and those that can carry more people you’ll need to be over the age of 23. Make sure that you carry your UK driver’s licence and passport whenever you’re driving around, and don’t remove any of the documentation that will be supplied with your car, such as insurance and third-part cover certificates.
