Top tips for renting a car in Menorca

  • Menorca is one of the smaller and less popular Balearic Islands; if you’ve previously holidayed in Ibiza, you’ll find driving here to be quite different. It’s a more rural island with fewer developed tourism spots and has a smaller population, so the roads are quieter and the driving pace is much more relaxed. You’ll find the roads are good, even when you’re exploring the rural areas between the towns. That said, some of the roads are more comfortable to drive in a vehicle with good ground clearance and extra torque, so an SUV or MPV would make a good choice. You generally won’t find much traffic on the roads outside of the main towns.
  • Menorca shares the same Spanish driving laws as neighbouring Ibiza. This requires any child who is shorter than 135 cm (a touch over 4 feet 4 inches) to be seated in a safety child seat, in the back seat of the car. No one under this height may sit in the front passenger seat, and all occupants must wear seat belts at all times. There are also laws that define the acceptable specifications for child seats (you can only use R44 or R129 certified seats); your car hire company should make sure of that for you – simply book it in advance when you hire your car.
  • You do need to be a bit conscious of petrol consumption when you’re driving around Menorca, as there aren’t many petrol stations on the island. Most of them are concentrated in and around the more populous towns, so if you’re travelling in regional areas on the island, we recommend that you top up at every opportunity. It will also help to hire a satellite navigation system that has the petrol stations tagged for you.
  • Book your rental car in Menorca at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about renting a car in Menorca

  • Should I hire a car in Menorca?

Because Menorca is less of a tourist destination, it doesn’t have the same level of infrastructure as Ibiza, which means that public transport is pretty sparse. This lends itself to hiring a car as the best choice if you want to see and do much more during your stay. While there may not be as many well-known tourist attractions here, there’s still plenty to discover and explore for those who like to get off the beaten track on holiday. The authentic lifestyle of the island is evident in Ciutadella Old Town, which still has cobblestone streets. The intriguingly shaped sandstone quarries at Ses Pedreres de s’Hostal are worth a visit, as is Monte Toro, a 13th-century church atop Menorca’s highest hill. For a quieter and more remote beach than those in the resort areas such as Cala Galdana, you can drive to Cal Turquet, located in a pine tree alcove.

  • What is driving like in Menorca?

Even though you’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road, which will take some adjustment, finding your way around is easy enough, as all the road signs are in English. The one thing that you might find a little arduous about driving on the opposite side of the road is that you’ll be changing gears with your unfamiliar hand, so it might be a good idea to just forego that and hire an automatic vehicle. There aren’t any major motorways, and you won’t find many dual carriageways either, so the maximum speed limit on the island is 80 km/h (about 50 mph), rather than the 120 km/h (75 mph) on Ibiza. Parking is easy to come by no matter where you are, so you won’t have to be concerned about that.

  • How old do you have to be to hire a car in Menorca?

You’ll have to be at least 20 years of age to hire a car in Menorca. Having said that, you should also note most car companies, including when booked through KAYAK, only make certain vehicle models available to those under 23. If you want to hire one of the more powerful models, for example, you’ll have to be 23 or older.

  • What is the most popular rental car in Menorca?

Premium (Mercedes-Benz V-Class or similar) is the most frequently booked rental car type in Menorca.
