Tokyo offers visitors an extensive array of options for public transportation. What’s more, the operating hours for these options tend to provide travelers with significant coverage during the day and night. That said, some paths between two points in this behemoth city may require you to change from one route to another, or even change to a different vehicle. For this reason, it may be wise to choose a rental vehicle for some, or all, of your journey. A rental will provide you with more autonomy over your travel schedule. Furthermore, it will give you the freedom to extend your travel adventure to other locations on the island.
Tokyo roads have all the modern accommodations that make driving comfortable. The area’s people are also friendly to international tourists. The street signs are marked in both Japanese and English, so you don’t have to be concerned about translating on the fly. One particular detail to note, however, is that roads operate similarly to those in the United Kingdom—the driver’s side of the car is on the right and vehicles run on the left side of the road. However, you are not allowed to turn left on a red light. At a traffic light, you must wait for the appropriate signal. Pedestrians and cyclists are required to travel on the right-hand side of the road; you’ll want to note that they also have the right of way on the roads.
The minimum age for renting a vehicle in Japan is 18 years old. This is also the minimum age to be able to drive in the country. Travelers who are visiting the country will also need to acquire International Driving Permits (IDPs) in order to secure their rentals. Take note, IDPs cannot be obtained once in Japan; they must be secured in your home country before your departure.
