Driving in Bangladesh is not for the faint of heart. You should have a lot of experience with defensive driving before getting behind the wheel of a car rental in Bangladesh. This is because driving here, especially in large cities, can be quite chaotic. Motorists generally do not respect the rules of the road, there are motorcycles and rickshaws darting between lanes of traffic, and often, you will find bumper to bumper traffic congestion within cities. Highways between cities are much easier to navigate, but the roads still are not in the best condition, so use caution no matter what.
You must be at least 21 years old to rent a car in Bangladesh. However, drivers under the age of 25 will often be subject to a young driver’s surcharge. These fees vary from agency to agency. You must also have your driver’s license from your home country that you have held for at least one year, your valid passport, and an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) in order to pick up a rental car in Bangladesh. You will likely also need a major credit card in your name for payment.
In Bangladesh, gas is bought by the liter. Recently, the price of gas in Bangladesh has been hovering around ৳130 (Bangladeshi Taka) per liter, which translates to about $1.20 per liter. These values then translate to about ৳492 per gallon, or $4.55 per gallon. If you are renting a car in Bangladesh and you plan to go on a road trip, it is a good idea to carry an extra tank of gas with you on the road, as you may encounter long stretches without seeing any stations to fuel up.
Speed limits in Bangladesh vary depending on the type of road and the area of the country you are driving in. For instance, within cities such as Dhaka, you are required to drive at 15 mph or slow (25 km/h). If you are on a highway, speed limits can reach up to 50 mph (80 km/h). Rural roads typically have speed limits around 18 mph (30 km/h). Always use your best judgment, keep your eye out for signage, and obey the rules of the road to avoid issues with traffic police.
